(EXCERPT)
Concepts - the basis of the design
Mutation within time and space - city was always
a place where exchange and movement determined continuous
transformations.
Hybridisation - intersection of the elements
required by the programme (housing, offices, sport...)
with the original configurations. Hybrid spatial configuration
is not characterised by a static geometry but by a
dynamic shape.
Emotion - connotes the temporal, sensitive
and aesthetic dimensions of motion.
Proximity - the research for new, integrated
solutions for the relationship between housing and
mobility infra-structures.
Process - stressing the order and integration
of operations on the relation between innovation and
the proceeding.
Project proposal
The site is a place where water, streets and railways
meet. It is a city of continuous urban transformation,
in-between memory and innovation, permanence and mutation.
The "refinery-landscape" suggests the physical and
conceptual elements necessary to the construction
of the "new urban space", but the project cannot be
considered as a finished solution but rather like
a process which takes into account future needs and
aspiration of its inhabitants. The evolution strategy
represents the peculiar aspect of the planning proposal.
Description of the programme and the elements
The project proposal is a combination of two different
elements: the bearing-frame and the basic
elements. The bearing frame supports and guarantees
the mobility of the basic elements, the goods and
the indoor flux of people. It has two-dimensional
and three-dimensional configuration.
Two-dimensional bearing frame shapes the surface
and consists of nets - the railway system, the traffic
circulation system (streets), the pedestrian path
system and technological net.
Three-dimensional bearing frame is constituted
by bridge cranes which support the residential cell
system and refinery's old cisterns transformed in
large containers that carry a single basic three-dimensional
elements.
The basic elements make the main structure
of the settling system. They come in a shape of trolley
(space and collective functions) and cell or container
(residential system). Trolleys are made in different
functional modules (paving, garden, pergola, portico,
football field, tribune, stage, multi-functional kiosk),
allowing for different applications according to necessities
and functional needs. Different applications of functional
modules create scenery (scenes) of urban space which
can easily and smoothly change and exchange. The residential
cell of fixed dimension (3.6 x 3.6 m) is made of a
metal frame and wooden-panel covering. It can be used
singularly or vertically and horizontally assembled.
The mobile elements and their applications which define
the settlement scenery are layered by four functional
elements:
- the itinerant museum
of the industrial culture
- the connection between
the church of St. Mary and the Fortress
- the riverside transformed
in walking areas with the pier for sport and leisure
activities
- the pedestrian path
system shaping the urban park through regular pattern
