Project
AT 356 (RI-20), «Space Green»
The project is concerned with the wider surroundings
of the competition area and addresses the hybridity
of the zone through the intervention on the site
and wider. Besides road access to the site, new
pedestrian access is introduced in the form of shortcut
lift from Rječina canyon. This aerial connection
serves not only as a functional link, but also visually
integrates the hillside intended for the botanical
garden.
Reanimation of Sv. Katarina is intended for the
large number of citizens, thus relatively high density
of construction is envisaged. Although this density
is appropriate for the city centre, the complex
structure is still fluid and light enough due to
the wise choice of typology and architectural forms.
The combinations of individual houses, urban villas
and collective housing are cleverly embedded in
the environment. The intertwining of the architecture
and nature reflects on private-public relationship,
too. Public and private mingle creating private,
semi-private and public areas. Whereas the slopes
and terrain rises are used for the houses so the
panoramic views are exploited, the public spaces
are situated in «hollows», or plain parts of the
terrain. Public space does not flow continuously,
but it takes fragmented, oval shapes positioned
centrally in relation to the houses.
Complex urban morphology which can be implemented
in phases is well elaborated on the architectural
scale offering the variety of shapes, sizes and
positions, thus enabling a number of uses and meeting
of different needs.
