Project BS 348 (ST-7), «Banana Urban Split»
Similar to the project coded ST 305, this one also recognises the green «boomerang», or «banana», as the authors call it. Here, however, this green belt is given an absolute priority - the planning begins with the design of open spaces, whereas the existing volumes are used as an inspiration for new elements, restoring the landscape and exploitation of traditional elements (church, dry-walls). Imperative of «green banana» led to the proposition to bury part of Zrinsko-Frankopanska Street, so that the landscape can continuously flow from around the stadium on the west towards the park on the east. This suggestion includes additional underground facilities such as commerce and parking lots.
Considering the whole area as a large urban park and concentration on open spaces planning is logically accompanied with accentuated landscape restoration. For the same reason whole residential programme is grouped in one mega-structure situated on the north side of Put Supavla Street. Following the main idea, this big volume is also permeated with natural elements, and imaginative combinations of open and natural elements (open spaces for social interactions, swimming pools on different levels, etc.) result in interesting section of the building.
From the presented one gets the impression of an inadequate treatment of ground level. There is also a question on feasibility and justification for designing the vertical «garden city» in Mediterranean climate conditions.
