As
the Jury of Europan 5 itself noted, the prime
qualities of Migsch&Krausse's project are the
innovative approach and excellent and sound initial
concept. Although the morphology of the zone disappeared,
the project is sensitive to the former typology
- a longitudinal strip of narrow and long parcels
is respected and used as basis of the urban concept.
Landscape
design is building the relationship between the
main street and the river bank. Greenery sprawls
form the river bank and penetrates deep into the
parcels towards the street. The nature is seen
as a part of architecture.
The zone is multifunctional. Besides housing,
the programme includes shops, business, inner
gardens and playgrounds. Public and private merge
and interact in a way that carefully balances
individual and collective aspirations.
Architecture
follows the same theme - the differentiation between
the public and private domain. In a sense, architecture
is dependent upon its urban role, and vice versa.
The inner road network allows public access to
the parcels in their whole depth, thus connecting
functions close to the main street (shops, cafés..)
with those on the river front (leisure, sport).
This connection and disposition of residences
emphasise panoramic views that are one of the
greatest landscape values of Vukovar.
Sensitivity
towards the memory of the site, the nature, interaction
of public and private, flexibility and innovative
thinking are just some of the many excellences
of this project which will soon be brought to
existence…
