THE MEDITERRANEAN CITY AND THE HUMAN SCALE Šibenik, as a mediterranean city, has a particular medieval urban fabric, specially interesting for its void spaces between edifications. What makes this kind of city liveable and attractive is that fact: they were made and developed through the years with a common factor, the human scale. They are used, lived and enjoyed at a 5km/h speed. The urban design proposal starts from the human scale spaces. From the social interaction to the urban network. THE HUMAN INTERACTION SCALE AND THE URBAN NETWORK A 5x5m module is chosen as the smallest piece for an human interaction. It can be a room or an open space. It´s comfortable and familiar for one person or for a small group of people. An urban design needs functionality and a good proportion of interaction and private spaces. A green passage between built strips is reserved for the social interaction. These passages are the communal backbone for the different neighborhoods, the space where the inhabitants meet each others. The project includes a specific set of rules around that green space, for it to become an open, winding, diverse and spontaneous space. FLEXIBILITY AND PRODUCTIVITY The regulations are set to achieve flexibility, diversity of buildings and spaces and to preserve the public and attractive character of the proposal´s interspaces. The project has a motto: the more you build, the more public space you give. The designed city prototype searches for a flexible density. It can always grow (with limits), but the public spaces willl grow proportionally. Housing schemes aim to develop residential, commercial and social facilities, mixed with the purpose of getting a productive city. This will generate an active city throughout the whole year. As architecture conciliates its shape after mediating with the programmed necessities in a long-lasting refining process, potential users engage in a building curating process, and play a key role to achieve an easygoing balance between complementaries, defining the place of their homes and constructing the neighborhood. JUST HUMAN SCALE What the proposal pursues is to get a “predictable spontaneity”, where the city is the result of the users´ desires and the dynamic cooperation among individuals, involving dialectic harmony between users and architecture and enhancing social sustainability.
